One of my favorite quotes....A few thoughts....

This is one of my favorite quotes from history about music....

I remember coming across it as a kid on an old pece of parchment paper at a museum shop...

Many of you may be familiar with it...

I think it says it all....

Many of you may know that I love history and the past...since I was a child I have been fascinated with all that has come before....and I still continue to study and read and learn all that I can...I am running out of room for my books!:)lol I have always wanted to have one of those old fashioned, somewhere out of time, European style office/libraries with the moving ladder to reach the shelves!:)lol

It blows me away that this was felt and said about music so long ago...

I actually titled my very first production demo cassette done for Polygram records many moons ago..."A Charm to Sadness"....

Hmmm...I have to find that tape and convert and post some songs from it sometime! Maybe some of you would get a kick out of it and like the songs!?

Joe Gande-Artwork by Liquid....and Myspace thoughts....

I was over on the almost now abandoned Myspace.com earlier today....

I was updating some things there and came across this wonderful, very cool and interesting super hero, caricature, artwork done by my friend Liquid some time ago...and I thought I would share:)

 

Ahhh...Myspace....it was once THE social network...though it seems to be a ghost town for some time now...and we're all on Facebook and the many other cool new social networking websites...it seems to be making a bit of a comeback these days...slowly but surely...I believe maybe because of some of the new features, Facebook integration etc...and probably due to it's new owner Justin Timberlake....and I have to say, though many pages it seems have been left behind and not updated for a year or more...there are thousands of new people signing up daily....and it is it still is a great place to check out music or get exposure for your music, or other work you may do and to connect/network and reach a worldwide audience online...As a musical artist...I do suggest stopping by once in awhile to see what's going on there....

What do you all think? Anyone still maintaining and/or utilizing their Myspace page?

Homemade Manhattan Style Clam Chowder

Made a late night, giant vat of Homemade Manhattan Style Clam Chowder! :)

I usually prefer New England Clam Chowder...but this was delicious...if I do say so myself! :) lol

Which do you like better?

I think this is the first time that I have made this...it has some San Marzano Tomatoes,  potatoes, clams, celery, corn, garlic, onion, thyme.... and a few other things:)

Should I add this recipe to my upcoming cookbook?

Zuppa di Pasta e Broccoli...Italian Soul Food!!

Hmmm... let's see...what do I have in the house at the moment....a box of Ziti...a bag of broccoli, some olive oil, a little grated cheese and a a few hot red pepper flakes, water...presto! Italian Soul Food!!:)

This is one of my very favorites...a fairly quick, simple, affordable, and healthy, home cooked meal that is delicious...yet it can also be served in the finest of restaurants...This is my Nonna's recipe...

 This is a a meatless dish...and just one wonderful example of what some these days may call "Italian peasant food"...dishes that were very basic and born out of necessity, hard times and love..."Food for survival" so to speak....and now these same dishes seem to nowadays be very trendy!

I will definitely have the full recipe in my upcoming cook book...

Joe Gande's Penne alla Vodka

 Tonight's Penne alla Vodka...

I'm currently working on a cook book of my recipes, creations and classic dishes to be released very soon...thought I'd share this with you all as I made it tonight for dinner....

Now for a nice espresso with anisette or sambuca!

Buon Giovedi a tutti!:)

 

Penne alla Vodka 

Ingredients:   

1 35 ounce can of Italian whole peeled plum tomatoes w/ liquid...San Marzano if           available.... 

 1 pound of Penne or Penne Rigatii

 1/4 cup or so of extra virgin olive oil 

 Garlic-5 to 10 cloves peeled 

Crushed hot red pepper flakes-to taste...add as much or little as you like..I like a lot! (Must be the Calabrese in me:) )

1/4 of a cup of vodka... tonight I used Sky Vodka...I usually use Absolue...doesn't matter really...whatever you have on hand or prefer

1/2 cup of heavy cream...or if not available at the time..improvise substituting using milk... 

2 tablespoons or so of butter...a little more to finish sauce at end... 

Chopped fresh Italian flat leaf parsley...a few tablespoons or so...if you don't have it on hand, just used the dried flakes... 

Fresh grated Parmigiano-Reggiano...about 1/2 cup or so...more for finishing at the table (If you don't have...improvise and use whatever grated cheese you may have on hand or prefer...parmesan, asiago, romano...etc, etc...) 

Salt 

Bring about 6 quarts of salted water to boil....in a big 8 quart pot... 
Pour the tomatoes into a food processor...pulse...(or if unavailable use a large bowl and stir, crush, mix etc).... 

Stir in the Penne into the water...stir...and bring back to a boil...stir frequently to avoid sticking...cook semi covered for about 8-10 minutes or so (check the box for time..all brands are a little different)... try one to see how it is...You can make them al dente(too the tooth) which is a little hard...but I'm not big on uncooked macaroni....I dig my pasta just right

Heat olive oil in a large skillet....throw in the garlic...cook a few minutes shaking the skillet until it's just turning a bit brown...(Do not Burn!) Throw in the tomatoes...well...don't throw!lol ease them in...they'll splatter a bit...bring it to a boil...season with salt and crushed red pepper...cooking for about 2 minutes or so.... 
Pour in vodka...lower heat to simmer until the pasta is ready.... 

Just before the pasta is done...get the garlic cloves out of the sauce (save for later snack)... 
Pour in the cream or milk...add the butter and a little more olive oil....swirl the skillet or swirl with a spoon to incorporate into the sauce... 
If your skillet is large enough...drain the pasta(or simply fish it out of the water with a skimmer) and add it right into the sauce in the skillet ...if the skillet is not large enough...drain the pasta and put it back in it's pot and add the sauce to it... 
Bring the sauce and pasta together to a low boil...stirring to coat all the penne.... 
Check the taste for seasoning...add salt and red pepper flakes if needed... 
Sprinkle in the parsley...simmer for a few minutes... 
Remove from heat...sprinkle in the cheese....and toss to mix... 
Serve and enjoy... 
Have additional cheese and red pepper on hand at the table if you'd like...to finish...to each person's taste...

My Father-Joe Gande & Happy Father';s Day to all!

I want to wish all the awesome Dads and everyone a very Happy Father's Day!! 
Hope you all enjoy an awesome day with your loved ones! I
 thought I would post this pic for Father's Day...this is a photo of my Dad...Joe Gande...

Not too long after this photo was taken we lost him...he would have been 84 this year. 
He was the best Dad and awesome Father and husband to my Mom...I am so very lucky....and feel blessed and very proud to be his son...
I miss you terribly Dad! Happy Father's Day to you!! I'm thinking of you and can feel you here with us!!

A bit of background...for those that might find it interesting...
My Father was Italian...His family is from Naples, Italy....and a he was a musician..a jazz musician....a jazz, bebop, bigband tenor saxophonist...as well as playing all other horns, piano and guitar as well...He played with Charlie Barnett, Horace Silver, Art Mooney, Addison farmer, Jo Jones, Joe Porcaro, Emil Richards...back in the day..in the 50's, and 60's.... just to name a few I can remember right now...it was very difficult to get stories out of him and find out what he had done, where he had been and who he knew and had played with over the years...he was a very, very cool, unassuming, modest and down to earth solid man... and never a bragger or boaster and one to talk about his laurels and past...I only know some things through asking my Mom and relatives and a little research...and my Mother even knew very little herself...
His instrument of choice? A very old and rare Selmer, cigar-cutter tenor saxophone...

Again...I want to wish everyone a very Happy Father's Day!!

Oh , and by the way...You can hear a small bit of my Father's playing on my CD "The Godsend Sessions"...I was able to capture a bit of a riff from a very old recording and put it at the end of the track "Can't See My Life"... I wanted some way to have him be a part of the album...seeing as much of it was inspired by him and he had passed right before production began....

Well, I am a super hero, but, apparently part human nonetheless-so being so busy & stressed I have officially run myself ragged & I am now sick!:)LOL This is what I looked like this morning when I woke up!!:)LOL Doctor says 10 days of R&R and antibiotics ought to do the trick and I'll be back to myself! Have a bad case of Bronchitis...so...I will try my best to get back to you all in regards to emails, comments, messages and music biz stuff asap!!:)
